The Minnesota Wild managed to win out in the Mike Reilly sweepstakes last summer, snagging the defenseman as a free agent out of the NCAA on an entry-level deal.
Last season, he put up 23 points in 45 regular season AHL games with the Iowa Wild, then spent another 29 games up at the NHL level with Minnesota. While with the big club, he put up a goal and seven points – good enough to continue getting looks with the Wild, but not enough to earn him a full-time spot in the lineup.
That seems like it may be the case again this year.
The Wild confirmed on Monday that the Central Division club had reassigned Reilly to the AHL after just one regular season game up in Minnesota, suggesting that he’ll yet again spend the season moving between the majors and the farm system. He failed to record a point in his one game this year.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, the 23-year-old defenseman spent three seasons at the University of Minnesota before going pro as a free agent with Minnesota. He was initially drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets – but after a 39-game, 42-point season of NCAA hockey, he opted to head elsewhere rather than staying with the team that drafted him.
The Wild have kicked off their 2016-17 season with a 1-1-0 record through two games, winning against the Winnipeg Jets after dropping their home opener to the St. Louis Blues.
