A family affair could be taking place in Los Angeles soon as the Pacific Division-leading Kings acquired left wing Brett Sutter from the Minnesota Wild on Monday for right wing Scott Sabourin.
Sutter, who has spent the entire season with Iowa of the American Hockey League, is the son of Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter. He has recorded four goals and 10 assists in 57 games with Iowa and will be assigned to Ontario by the Kings.
Selected by Calgary in the sixth round of the 2005 draft, Brett Sutter debuted for the Flames in 2008-09, scoring one goal in four games. The 6-foot, 200-pounder failed to notch a point in 10 contests the following season and recorded one assist over four games in 2010-11 before being traded to Carolina, where he became teammates with his cousin Brandon.
Brett Sutter remained with the Hurricanes until signing with Minnesota on July 1, 2014. The 28-year-old native of Viking, Alberta registered three assists in six games with the Wild last season and has collected two goals and 10 points in 60 contests with the Flames, Hurricanes and Minnesota.
Undrafted, Sabourin signed a three-year contract with the Kings on October 7, 2013 but has yet to make his NHL debut. The 23-year-old recorded three goals and two assists in 28 games with Ontario of the AHL this season.
A native of Orleans, Ontario, the 6-foot-3, 203-pound Sabourin was a member of Manchester’s Calder Cup-winning team last campaign.
