The Minnesota Wild finished their postseason early this spring, falling 4-2 in their playoff series against the Dallas Stars – and now that they’re out, blue liner Marco Scandella is one of a handful of players who will need plenty of recovery time in the offseason.
The team confirmed on Thursday that Scandella may need hernia surgery this summer, while three other players – Jonas Brodin, Erik Haula, and Jared Spurgeon – are all nursing injuries of their own coming out of their playoff push. Per the team, Brodin is dealing with a foot injury, Haula will recover from a hip injury in the offseason, and Spurgeon is being listed with an upper-body injury.
Although the team gave no specifics about what exactly Spurgeon’s injury is, it was confirmed that he played ‘at 80% all year’.
These four injuries likely made a playoff push for the Wild that much harder, as all of the skaters mentioned above play crucial roles on the team. Scandella finished the year on the blue line with five goals and 22 points through 73 games, Haula was a 14-goal scorer in the regular season, and Brodin – a former tenth overall pick by the team from 2011 – had three points in his six postseason games.
The Scandella injury is the biggest question mark, since the team won’t specify exactly what’s wrong with the defenseman, but all four will need to make full recoveries for the team by the time they start the next season.
